AI Tool Predicts and Prevents Mould Before It Forms!

Researchers at a West Yorkshire university have developed an AI tool capable of detecting the potential for mould before it forms. The technology, created by Leeds Beckett University in collaboration with BuildEco, analyzes buildings to identify areas prone to dampness and mould, offering solutions to address these risks.

Dr. Jamiu Dauda, who led the project, described the tool as akin to having an AI agent that warns homeowners about potential mould issues. With up to 6.5 million homes in England affected by damp and mould, according to government estimates, the tool is particularly relevant for social housing, where such problems are more prevalent.

The initiative comes in the wake of Awaab’s Law, introduced after the tragic death of two-year-old Awaab Ishak in 2020, which mandates landlords to quickly address hazardous conditions like mould. Dr. Dauda explained that the AI technology calculates mould risk using factors such as building size and energy performance.

Currently being used by SMEs in the construction sector, the tool is expected to expand to landlords, tenants, and homeowners in the future. Plans for a full rollout include integrating smart meters to automatically gather data and provide recommendations for mould prevention.

Dr. Dauda emphasized the technology’s potential impact, particularly in improving living conditions in social housing.
