David Miller Lashes Out at ICC After South Africa’s Painful Exit from Champions Trophy

David Miller Criticizes ICC Over Scheduling After South Africa’s Champions Trophy Exit

South African batter David Miller expressed frustration with the International Cricket Council (ICC) following his team’s Champions Trophy semi-final loss to New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Wednesday.

Miller Blames Scheduling for South Africa’s Struggles

Miller pointed out that the tight travel schedule negatively impacted the Proteas’ performance. He specifically criticized the frequent travel demands placed on his team during the tournament.

  • South Africa and Australia, the Group B semi-finalists, had to travel to Dubai after completing their group-stage matches.
  • This delay was caused by India’s semi-final opponent remaining undecided until they defeated New Zealand in the third league match.
  • After India’s win, South Africa had to fly back to Lahore for their semi-final against New Zealand, while Australia remained in Dubai to face India.

Miller Calls Travel Schedule ‘Far from Ideal’

The left-handed batter, who scored a record-breaking century against New Zealand, was vocal about the difficulties caused by the travel arrangements.

“It’s only an hour-and-40-minute flight, but the fact that we had to do that was not ideal,” Miller said.

  • He highlighted how the early-morning travel schedule impacted the team’s recovery.
  • South Africa landed in Dubai at 4 p.m. but had to fly back at 7:30 a.m., leaving little time to rest.
  • Miller emphasized that while the flight was short, the back-and-forth travel was disruptive and unfair.

Miller’s Record-Breaking Performance in Vain

Despite the challenges, Miller delivered an outstanding performance, smashing a century off just 67 balls—the fastest in Champions Trophy history.

  • He became the first player to score a Champions Trophy century in under 70 balls.
  • His century broke Virender Sehwag’s 23-year-old record (77 balls vs. England in 2002).
  • Miller also became the first South African to score two centuries in ICC knockout matches, having done so against Australia in the 2023 World Cup semi-final.

South Africa’s Journey Ends as New Zealand Advances

Despite Miller’s heroic innings, South Africa fell short, losing to New Zealand by 50 runs. As a result, New Zealand will now face India in the Champions Trophy final on March 9 at Dubai International Stadium.
