The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has provided a fresh update on the launch of Starlink, the satellite internet service by Elon Musk’s SpaceX. The announcement came during a briefing to the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on IT, led by Senator Palwasha Khan.
Starlink’s License Progress
- Starlink submitted its license application to PTA on February 24, 2022.
- The company is currently in contact with regulatory bodies to fulfill all formal requirements.
Mandatory Registrations
Before getting approval, Starlink must complete two essential steps:
- Registration with Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP)
- Approval from Pakistan Single Window (PSW)
Without these clearances, the licensing process cannot move forward.
Compliance Commitment
Starlink has assured PTA of its commitment to following Pakistan’s national policies and regulations. PTA has promised a transparent review process to ensure the service aligns with the country’s rules.
New Competitors in the Market
Besides Starlink, Shanghai Space Technology is also preparing to enter the Pakistani market. This could improve the country’s internet infrastructure and bring more competition.
Oversight on Space Technologies
The Standing Committee has invited SUPARCO (Pakistan’s Space Research Organization) to discuss the need for a regulatory framework for space-related technologies.
Potential Impact on Pakistan’s Digital Growth
If approved, Starlink’s satellite internet service could transform internet access in remote areas of Pakistan. It promises:
- High-speed internet
- Better connectivity in rural regions
- Digital inclusion for underserved communities
Elon Musk has already shown interest in bringing Starlink to Pakistan, but the final decision depends on the government’s approval.
Starlink’s arrival could mark a new era for Pakistan’s digital landscape, opening doors for technological advancements and improved connectivity across the country.
