ISLAMABAD – Senior politician and member of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Sher Afzal Marwat, delivered a fiery statement on Thursday, criticizing the frequent and unchecked presence of police officials within the premises of the Parliament.
Speaking to media representatives, Marwat said:
“پولیس منہ اٹھائے آجاتی ہے، ان لوگوں نے پارلیمان کو مندر کا گھنٹہ بنا دیا ہے”
(“Police enter without any restraint — they’ve turned Parliament into a temple bell.”)
The metaphor suggests that the sanctity and dignity of Parliament are being compromised, as law enforcement agencies are allegedly entering the building at will, without respect for the elected representatives or parliamentary procedures.
Marwat’s remarks come in the wake of increasing tensions between the opposition and government over alleged political victimization, arrests, and interference in legislative matters. He accused the authorities of treating Parliament like a public place where anyone can walk in and disrupt proceedings.
“This is not just a building. It is the house of the people. If police can come and go as they please, then what remains of democratic integrity?” he added.
Opposition leaders echoed Marwat’s concerns, accusing the government of using state institutions as tools to suppress dissent. Human rights groups have also raised alarms about the growing use of force against political figures, especially from the PTI.
So far, the government has not issued an official response to Marwat’s comments.
