The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has started licencing Virtual Private Network (VPN) service providers under its Class Licence for Data Services. This step aims to ensure secure and legal use of private internet gateways in Pakistan.
Key Updates on VPN Licencing
1. VPN Providers Get Approval
PTA has approved two companies for VPN licences, allowing them to offer secure and legal VPN services.
2. Focus on Security and Transparency
Businesses can now use licensed VPNs for safe and legal purposes, ensuring data security, privacy, and compliance.
3. Call for More VPN Registrations
PTA has encouraged other VPN providers to apply for licencing, strengthening secure internet access in the country.
Why VPN Registration Became Necessary?
1. Crackdown on Unregistered VPNs
In November 2023, PTA blocked unregistered VPNs to improve internet security. It then introduced a simplified registration process for legal users.
2. Increased VPN Usage Due to Censorship
VPNs help users bypass restrictions. In Pakistan, many people use VPNs to access X (formerly Twitter), which has been banned since February 2024 due to national security concerns.
3. Communication Issues on WhatsApp
In July 2024, users reported problems sending and receiving media files on WhatsApp. Some still face this issue today.
Collaboration for a Secure Digital Future
To support IT and e-commerce sectors, PTA worked with:
- Ministry of IT & Telecommunication (MoIT&T)
- Pakistan Software Export Board (PSEB)
- Pakistan IT Association (P@SHA)
This collaboration ensures uninterrupted access for IT companies, freelancers, and businesses. PTA remains committed to a safe and compliant digital economy.
By introducing VPN licencing, PTA aims to protect user data, improve cybersecurity, and promote responsible internet usage in Pakistan.
