China Strikes Back: 34% Tariffs on US Goods Amid Intensifying Trade War with Trump
BEIJING/WASHINGTON — In a significant escalation of the US-China trade war, China has announced sweeping countermeasures in response to President Donald Trump’s latest tariff hike. These include a 34% tariff on all US goods and strict export curbs on rare earth minerals vital to American industries.
Trump’s Tariff Trigger
On Wednesday, President Trump revealed a 34% tariff on Chinese goods — in addition to the 20% already in place — bringing total levies to a staggering 54%. This move, aimed at protecting US manufacturing and balancing trade deficits, has triggered swift retaliation from Beijing.
China Hits Back with Full Force
In response, China’s Ministry of Finance declared on Friday that it would implement:
- A 34% tariff on all US imports starting April 10
- Export restrictions on critical rare earth elements like samarium, gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium
- Suspension of agricultural imports, including sorghum, poultry, and bonemeal from major US suppliers
- Export bans on 16 American firms and the addition of 11 US companies to its “unreliable entities” list, including Skydio Inc. and BRINC Drones
These actions signal China’s aggressive stance in defending its national interests and economic sovereignty.
WTO Complaint Filed
China has formally lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), arguing that the new US tariffs violate global trade rules. A statement from Beijing’s WTO mission confirmed it is seeking consultations and legal remedies.
“The export controls are to safeguard national security and fulfill international obligations,” stated China’s Ministry of Commerce.
Impact on Global Markets and Strategic Industries
Beijing’s new restrictions target the heart of US technological and industrial supply chains. The ban on rare earth exports is particularly alarming, as these minerals are essential for the defense, electronics, and renewable energy sectors.
Agricultural exports have also taken a hit. Chinese customs suspended imports from US grain giant C&D (USA) Inc., further straining American farmers.
Meanwhile, China has launched an anti-dumping probe on US and Indian medical CT tubes, potentially restricting another lucrative export channel.
